Senior Consultant / Ethnographer


The Hartman Group is seeking an experienced research and consulting professional with strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, qualitative consumer research expertise and a passion for food culture. This individual will lead projects to help uncover growth opportunities for national and global clients in the food and beverage industry. Position Summary:

Leads consulting and strategy projects that utilize a blend of ethnographic research methods, qualitative analysis and market analytics, depending on project needs. Designs and/or contributes to project proposals, makes consultative recommendations to clients and mentors skill development of team members, particularly in story development, conclusions and recommendations. Understands and applies Hartman Group research models and intellectual capital and can represent The Hartman Group in industry and client situations as needed. Provides thought leadership to keep The Hartman Group on the leading edge of consumer culture and actionable insights for food and beverage clients.                                                       


Project management

  • Project design and execution

  • Manage day-to-day client relations for projects

  • Turn thoughtful analysis and interpretation into strong written and visual storytelling, with strategic implications and recommendations
  • Synthesize multiple, complex data sets, including survey research results and basic sales data to support qualitatively driven insights and recommendations
  • Prioritize to achieve rapid analytical workflow
  • Internal collaboration to generate unique insights and solve problems
  • Leverage Hartman Group intellectual capital for analysis, reporting and presentations
  • Provide analytical leadership and mentoring to project teams

Persuasive communications, reports and presentations

  • Strong external written and verbal communications to strengthen client relationships, inspire confidence and support project management
  • Effective internal communication for appropriate collaboration
  • Persuasive written and verbal communication of project outcomes and strategic recommendations for clients

Thought leadership/creativity

  • Participate in proposal development with established and innovative study designs
  • Develop new methods, both individually and collaboratively
  • Participate in development of new Hartman Group products and services
  • Facilitate internal and client work sessions / ideations (progressive responsibility)



  • Graduate degree in cultural anthropology, qualitative sociology, social psychology or related field; Ph.D. a plus


  • 7+ years of qualitative consumer research experience
    • Ethnographic interviews, participant observation, focus groups, in-depth interviews, in-home visits, job shadowing, shop-alongs, and online qualitative research
    •  At least 3–5 years of experience outside of an academic setting
  • 5+ years client-facing, project leadership experience


  • Familiar with the methods and use of survey research and / or data analytics
  • Strong writing and persuasive communication skills
  • Experienced and confident presenter
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, notably PowerPoint and Excel
  • Design and data visualization skills a plus

Industry Expertise

  • Food and beverage experience highly desirable — consumer packaged goods, grocery retail, food service; consumer research
  • Professional or personal expertise in topic areas of Health & Wellness, Sustainability, Food Trends a plus
