Methodology: The quantitative portion of the research reported here comes from a survey of The Hartman Group’s online panel of consumers, with a final sample of 379. The panel is composed of a self-selected sample of consumers who have expressed an in interest in completing surveys regarding health and wellness issues. While the selective nature of the sample will tend to skew results in the direction of pro health and wellness responses, we have developed weights to adjust for this tendency based upon a standardized set of questions that tap key wellness dimensions, such as use of supplements and alternative healthcare providers

Pulse Report: The Low-Carb Diet and Today's Consumer

The first in our Pulse Report series examines what a low-carb diet means to consumers and to your business. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, we reveal the logical and not so logical connections between consumers' lifestyles, eating habits, and adherence to low-carb diets.

We targeted consumers at all points along the "carbohydrate continuum," including those who intentionally follow the low-carb diet as well as those who do not claim to do so but whose typical eating habits may in fact reflect a low-carb diet to varying degrees. In this way, we examine the low-carb diet in terms of the full spectrum of consumer perspectives, allowing us to better predict future trends and potential target groups.

Report Overview

  • Estimates the number of consumers who intentionally adopt the diet for short- and long-term time periods and describes their key eating behaviors;
  • Estimates the number of consumers who are not aware that their typical eating patterns reflect a low-carb diet and describes their key eating behaviors;
  • Identifies the overall impact of a low-carb diet on consumption patterns.

Answers these Questions

  • What meanings do consumers attribute to low-carb diets and how do these influence their dieting behavior?
  • Are the majority of consumers on low-carb diets without knowing it? How do these individuals differ from intentional low-carb dieters in terms of lifestyle characteristics?
  • What differentiates consumers who use the low-carb diet for short-term objectives from those who use it as the basis for a lifestyle change?
  • In their own terms, how do individuals measure the success and/or failure of their low-carb diets?
  • What are the drivers and barriers that consumers associate with low-carb diets?

This report is specifically geared towards explaining consumer trends with respect to the low-carb phenomenon so that manufacturers and retailers alike can reliably determine how it will impact their business today and into the near future.
